Energy Savings

Heating and air conditioning systems are often the biggest source of energy consumption in any home or business. Though most modern systems are built to be energy efficient, keeping your home cool during hot seasons and warm during cold seasons will use most of your home’s energy.

Understanding how your HVAC appliances use energy is crucial to energy savings.

By learning more about energy efficiency, you can lower the strain on your wallet and your HVAC system.

UNDERSTANDING HVAC APPLIANCE EFFICIENCY RATINGS

There are a few different types of ratings used to measure the energy efficiency of your HVAC system:

  • AFUE — AFUE — This stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, which is the percentage of fuel your heating system converts into heat. The higher your AFUE percentage, the more efficient your heating system is.
  • EER — The Energy Efficient Ratio measures how efficiently your system uses energy to cool a space. EER ratings usually only measure energy efficiency using one temperature.
  • SEER — The Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio also measures how much energy is used to cool a space, but SEER ratings measure energy efficiency during different temperatures.

You can usually find these ratings whenever you shop for a new HVAC appliance. The higher the rating, the more energy efficient your appliance will be.

HOW TO IMPROVE ENERGY EFFICIENCY

There are several things homeowners can do to improve energy efficiency without having to buy a new appliance, such as:

MAINTAIN YOUR DUCTWORK

Even with a high energy efficiency rating, your HVAC system will have to work harder if your ductwork is too small, poorly installed, or clogged with dirt and debris. Be sure to maintain your home duct systems by insulating ducts, cleaning air filters, and fixing broken or badly installed ducts.

INSTALL PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTATS

Using a programmable thermostat makes it easy to keep your home comfortable while saving money on energy costs. You can easily program your thermostat to turn off the heat or air conditioning once your home reaches a certain temperature, reducing the energy your HVAC system uses.

MAINTAIN YOUR HVAC SYSTEM

Regular HVAC system maintenance prolongs the life of your system by ensuring everything is running correctly. Periodic maintenance also takes care of any minor issues before they become major problems. Make sure you schedule regular service appointments, especially during the winter and summer seasons.

Cool Image Heating and Air Conditioning is the team to trust when it comes to any HVAC issues. We can make sure your system stays efficient for years while not compromising on comfort, no matter what the weather is like outside.
